Why We Chose Shiitake Mushrooms for Bhutan
When we set out to build Fungi Flow Ecosystem, we spent a great deal of time researching which mushroom variety would be the best fit for Bhutan's climate, resources, and market needs. Shiitake quickly stood out as the clear choice. Native to East Asia and grown for centuries, shiitake thrives on sawdust-based substrate, requires relatively little space, and produces consistently high yields when growing conditions are properly managed. Combined with Bhutan's organic agriculture policy and the growing demand for nutritious, locally produced food, shiitake felt like a natural fit from the very beginning.
